Drawstring bags (called wallets, once upon a time), date back at least to the 14th century in the West. However, that date is based on the earliest actual date I could find on the internet, and isn’t comprehensive; a search for “archaeology drawstring” reveals the technology is probably much older. 

In any case, assuming you pick a fabric appropriate to your ideal period, you can use them pretty much any time. Enjoy!
